Vegan Surfcamp experience

A summer in the vegan surf camp

This summer was a blast. It was a lot more than just warm and sunny. Especially the two months I have spent in the vegan surf camp in Moliets-et-Maa were a never forget experience – unique, intense, fun. I can only speak from my experience of a person who used to work there, not from the perspective of a guest. But for everything I know every single person who visited this camp didn’t want to leave it. Many guests spontaneously stayed a week or two longer than planned (which was only possible in low season because in high season it was fully booked). Even if it is not the cheapest camp, it is worth the money.

This Video can give you a better impression:

The vegan surf camp is known for its delicious organic food which attracts not just the guests but also people from other camps. The vegan camp provides a big choice of soup, porridge, cereals, bread, fruits and also left overs from the evening buffet for breakfast. So everyone gets a solid base for their day of surfing and yoga. Everyone can bring a lunch box and prepare their lunch to bring to the beach or eat afterwards. They also have fridges to store personal food.

The buffet in the evening has a big choice of different things every day – only healthy and nutritious food. They have a mexican night, pizza night, pasta night, burger night, sushi night and so on, but always other option so everyone can create their perfect diner.

In the vegan camp you are never bored. A lot of activities are offered throughout the week – such as beach games, beach clean up, a day trip to San Sebastian, cooking classes and conferences about interesting topics. On the arrival day, they do some welcome games, so those who like can meet the other people and get to know each other. They have surf theory, sunset surf, sunset yoga and a movie night. They have a party twice a week (sometimes with special Djs) at their own bar where they sell drinks and snacks.

Despite the food and the general activities this camp is all about surfing and yoga.
In their self made yoga barn they offer 2-4 classes every day for a little donation from 2-3€/class. They offer some classes in the morning and some in the evening. They have different yoga teachers throughout the season but everyone teaches in english and you will get a big choice of different stlyes – some more dynamic, some more calming. If too many people show up there is always the opportunity to go take the class to the forest which is also really nice. No matter your previous yoga experience, everyone can join.

The surfing is always split in several groups so your classes are at a different time every day. You have a choice between 10 or 13 hours a week and are provided with everything you need. The experienced surf teachers tell you all the theoretical knowledge you need and help you improving through personal guidance. As most of the people are beginners you don’t need to worry about your level.

It’s not the cheapest camp but you get a lot for your money. They have comfortable tents, good food, nice staff and guests. If you have the money and the time I recommend to stay at least for two weeks. Generally I would recommend visiting the camp in low season because the whole campside, the beach, the classes, the buffet… everything is less crowded. But don’t worry, even in high season you must love it.

In Moliets-et-Maa they have some nice shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars. So if you wanna go out you have a lot of options. Hossegor or Biarritz are also just a short car ride away (1/2 or 1 hour). In Moliets (“downtown”) they also have a doctor and a pharmacy, just in case 😉

Lonely travelers are in the perfect spot. You will always meet people who travel by themselves and easily make friends in this great community.

Also family and kids have a great time here. With a special area for kids, with a trampoline, games, a ping-pong table, tabletop football, skateboards the only problem is too many options.

Getting there with public transport is quite easy with a shuttle service called westcoast transfer from Biarritz or Bordeaux (but only on saturdays, on other days it can be harder).

I hope I was able to help you getting a better impression and make the right decision 🙂
